ASX announcements referencing "media reports"

December 5, 2024

Here is a list of interesting ASX announcements referencing "media reports". Do they name the outlet and was the story right? There will be dozens of these so send any other examples through to stephen@maynereport.com.

Australian Family Law (AFL): stuffed up its rem reporting and got whacked by Rear Window two days running (see here and here), then made this ASX announcement saying The AFR pieces justified this mea culpa to the ASX.

BHP, 2024: made this interesting announcement on Australia Day in 2024 responding to media coverage about its dam collapse liabilities following a Brasilian court decision.

Brambles, 2022: headlined this announcement on May 16 2022 "response to media speculation" after someone leaked the possibility of a CVC takeover bid to The AFR's Street Talk column and then other media followed it up. Proved to be a beat up as Brambles advised the ASX that CVC walked away the next day.

Cettire, 2024: ripped into The Australian over claimed inaccuracies in a piece published on May 27, 2024.

Group 6 Metals, 2022: was encouraging investors to watch 4 Corners in this announcement on May 10, 2022.

HIH Insurance, 2001: launched some bizarre over the top attacks on The Australian's Mark Westfield ahead of its collapse as is explained in this Crikey package at the time.

Metcash (MTS), 2024: went into a trading halt on February 1 citing this Street Talk article speculating that it was about to buy Superior Foods.

Ramelius Resources (RMS), 2024: released this wishy washy statement after press reports about merger talks with Canadian listed Karora.

Southern Cross Media (SXL), 2024:
released this statement on December 5, 2025 which got stuck into this AFR Street Talk column about a so-called "poison pill".

Tyro Payments, 2022: in October 2022 it put out this ASX announcement responding to media reports that Westpac had made an offer.

Virotech, 2000: told the ASX in 2000 that it would be suing Jenny Prahbu and The Australian's Michael West for their coverage on its water treatment processes.
